Facilities at the Department of Chemistry, UWI, Mona Campus, Jamaica

The Department has a considerable amount of equipment dedicated to research activities.
This includes:

Bruker P4 single crystal and D2200 powder X-ray diffractometers
Bruker NMRs (500 Mhz and 200 MHz-multiprobe with Magic Angle Spinning).
Perkin Elmer Lambda 19 UV/VIS/NIR spectrometer.
Other UV/Vis spectrometers (including Diode Array)
Nitrogen and Dye Lasers, Powerful YAG and Dye Lasers for photophysical studies, Helium refrigerated cryogenic system for measurements in the temperature range 18-350K;
GC with headspace analyser,
HP 6890 GC with HP5873 MS with NCI/PCI modes and HPLC chromatography systems. An Agilent HPLC/MS is soon to be installed;
atomic absorption spectrometer;
Fluorescence and Rapid Scanning spectrometers;
Hi-Tech stopped flow kinetics equipment and Hi-Tech stopped flow with rapid scanning spectrometer;
FTIR spectrometers (Perkin-Elmer and Bruker)
a CHN analyser is soon to be installed
PARR and BAS electrochemistry equipment
food laboratory and culture and fermentation equipment;
computing facilities for data handling, report writing, program development and internet connection. Fibre optic lines to the University backbone connect all Chemistry buildings.

many smaller specialised instruments and equipment.

The Department has a liquid nitrogen plant and glassblowing and machine shop facilities for construction and routine maintenance of equipment. In addition, due to the work of members of the Department, many contacts have been made with national and international organizations (Universities, Companies, Agencies, etc.) and through these it is often possible to have spectra etc. recorded, when such facilities are not available in the Department.

The University has many facilities to which Chemistry students may have access, including a well stocked library, the International Centre for Nuclear Sciences and the Environment (for trace multi-element analysis work), a scanning electron microscope and the Computer Centre has fibre-optic network links to the Department.
