Common Chemical Shift Values
Between 0-5 δ, OH and NH proton signals may appear.
The chemical shifts for these protons present special problems.
An OH group map appear nearly anywhere in the spectrum and the
observed chemical shift is dependent on a number of things such
as concentration, solvent and trace impurities.
One method used for determining whether a peak is due to an OH
group is that of deuterium exchange. By treatment with
D2O, the hydrogens often rapidly exchange and the peak
then disappears.
Hydrogens attached to nitrogen atoms may not show up at all in a
spectrum or they may be extremely broad and unresolved.
