CHEM1902 Coordination Chemistry.
(An Introductory course at UWI, Mona, JAMAICA) by Prof. R.J. Lancashire
Course Objectives
A note about On-line course information
- Lecture 1. Introduction to Transition Metal Ions and Coordination
Chemistry. The Periodic Table
d-orbital occupation and electronic configuration of
M2+ ions, common oxidation numbers and their colours.
General properties of TM Elements. Useful Definitions - ligand, chelate,
coordination number etc. Examples of
common ligands available in PDF format
- Lecture 2. Review of Common
Stereochemistries (CN = 2..12). Examples given for each
type, available in PDF format
- Lecture 3. Introduction to Crystal Field
Theory. Shapes of d-orbitals, the energy of the d-orbitals with respect to
the effect of octahedral, tetrahedral and square planar crystal fields.
- Lecture 4. Consequences of CFT. High-spin,
Low-spin complexes and the spectrochemical series.
Magnetic Moments of octahedral, tetrahedral and square planar
complexes.
- Lecture 5. Stability of Metal Complexes.
The difference between
Kinetic and Thermodynamic stability. Stepwise
formation constants. Chelation and the
Chelate Effect.
- Lecture 6. Isomerism.
Stereoisomerism and Structural isomerism, available in
PDF format
- Nomenclature of Coordination
Complexes. This will not be covered in lectures, but is
required for successful completion of the course. See an example
of how you can develop a systematic
approach to naming and drawing complexes.
